Former librarian. With ebooks, the decision of how many people can read an ebook at one time is limited by contract and controlled by the program that manages ebooks.
I am a former library director so I speak with some experience and authority. Decisions about how a library looks, how it spends its money, and what services it offers are NOT made by librarians. They are made by City Managers, School Superintendents, or college Chancellors who haven’t used a library in 25 years. These andministrators are trying to make a name for themselves by being “innovative” or by saving money. They don’t care how patrons need to use the library. They turn it into whatever they need it to be then manipulate patron data to fit their needs. Do I sound bitter? I hope so because I am!
I think you have every right to sound bitter. I'm sure that was difficult for you to manoeuvre and frustrating. I find this is a massive issue overall. I'd hope who aren't directly involved should at least consult people like you about such things before making decisions.
I totally get this, we're in a world that would prefer the ease of AI over an authors copyright rights, or creativity as a whole. Also it's nice to hear you relate and I'm not the only one with a different relationship to books than my teenage years!
I’m ver old school that way. I still prefer a hard copy over kindles. I still prefer writing over typing so i can totally relate to it :)
It's so nice to know other people have a preference for hard copies. I would love to write by hand more than I type, but I get hand cramps 😅
If only i could share an image of my notes. But you’ll never be able to decipher my hand writing.
It would be very aesthetic other than the handwriting problem we pretty much all have!
